Sarah Schauer, APRN, PMHNP-BC, AGNP-C
Board-certified in psychiatric-mental health nursing with nearly 13 years of clinical experience — including a decade in primary care. I bring a whole-person lens to medication management for teens, adults, and older adults.
Especially welcoming to first responders, healthcare workers, and those whose careers depend on confidentiality.
I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with nearly 13 years of clinical experience. Before my psychiatric training, I spent a decade as an adult/geriatric primary care APRN — and earlier in my career, I worked as an EMT.
For the past 7 years I have practiced in a correctional setting, where careful medication management, clear communication, and steady clinical judgment matter. I bring a primary-care-informed lens to psychiatric care: I understand how sleep, medical conditions, medications, and life stressors interact with mood, anxiety, and attention.
I believe every person deserves a prescriber who listens, explains the reasoning behind every recommendation, and starts low and goes slow.
I started my career as an EMT. I know what it means to work odd hours, push through exhaustion, and keep it together when everything around you is falling apart. For the past seven years I have worked in a correctional setting alongside corrections officers and healthcare staff who operate in high-stress, high-stakes environments every day.
That experience shapes the way I practice. I don't pathologize resilience. I understand the culture of self-reliance, the stigma around asking for help, and the very real career concerns that make confidentiality a necessity rather than a preference. You don't have to explain your world to me.
This practice is particularly welcoming to: first responders, EMS, law enforcement, corrections staff, healthcare workers, and licensed professionals — but anyone who wants a prescriber who listens carefully and takes their time is in the right place.
I see patients ages 13 through older adulthood. Best fit for thoughtful, motivated people who want a prescriber who listens and explains the reasoning behind every recommendation.

Choosing a private-pay practice isn't just about convenience — it comes with real, meaningful advantages for your privacy and your care.
Insurance billing requires a psychiatric diagnosis to be filed with your insurer and potentially shared with employers, life insurance companies, and other third parties. Private pay means your diagnosis stays between you and your provider — full stop.
Your records are not shared with insurance companies, reviewed by utilization managers, or accessible through insurer databases. This is especially important for first responders, healthcare workers, licensed professionals, and anyone whose career could be affected by a mental health record.
Insurance companies can dictate treatment decisions, limit visit frequency, and require prior authorizations that delay your care. Without that interference, your treatment is guided entirely by your clinical needs — not by what an insurer is willing to approve.
This practice is completely independent — not affiliated with any employer, union, EAP (Employee Assistance Program), or occupational health system. Your employer has no access to your records, no knowledge of your care, and no involvement in your treatment whatsoever.
A superbill can be provided upon request so you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement through your own insurance if you choose. HSA and FSA funds are also accepted, making private pay more affordable than it may initially appear.
Your psychiatric care is not subject to insurance approvals or utilization reviews. For medications, insurance can still be used at the pharmacy — and some prescriptions may still require a prior authorization through your insurer. When that's the case, alternatives including GoodRx or paying out-of-pocket will always be discussed so you can make the most informed decision.
This is a private-pay practice, independent of any employer, union, or EAP. A superbill is provided for potential out-of-network reimbursement through your insurance.
